SoR Student-Member Travel Grants for ICR 2020

The Society of Rheology is offering student-member travel grants to help support the cost of attending the 18th International Congress on Rheology in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil held December 13-18, 2020.

Eligibility

These grants are available to any graduate student who, along with his or her advisor, is an SoR member in good standing as of April 1, 2020 (extended due to the postponement of ICR 2020). Note that membership in SoR runs from January 1st or the date of joining/renewing, whichever is later, to December 31st of the year. To be eligible, the student and the advisor must have renewed their memberships for 2020 before April 1, 2020.

In addition, the student must present a paper or poster at the conference and stay in Ibis Barra da Tijuca, one of the conference hotels.

Special Consideration for ICR: Students who have received SoR student-member travel grants in the past are welcomed to apply.

What are covered

Each grant will cover at most five nights (Check-in: Sunday December 13 / Check-out: Friday December 18) of lodging at the conference rate and the early-bird student conference fee. Travel to and from the conference and any costs incurred during the conference, other than the hotel room and the student conference fee, are the responsibility of the applicant.

Application material needed from students

To apply, the student must write a letter requesting the grant, confirming that he or she is a member as of April 1, 2020, and discussing his or her commitment to membership in the Society. The student should verify that he or she has submitted an oral presentation or poster abstract and that he or she will be presenting the work. The student should also confirm that he or she will have funding from his or her advisor to cover all other costs required to attend the conference. The letter should not be no longer than one page.

Application material needed from advisors

The student’s advisor should add a letter of support, certifying that both the advisor and the student are SoR members as of April 1, 2020, indicating the session and title of the submitted oral presentation or poster abstract, and confirming that the student will be the presenter. Include a statement of commitment to pay for the student travel to and from the conference. Note that while we anticipate only one applicant per advisor will be accepted, additional students will be allowed if space permits. If more than one student is applying, each letter should indicate the advisor’s priority as we cannot guarantee there will be sufficient positions to have more than one student per advisor. The letter should not be no longer than one page.

How to apply

Letters from the student and advisor should be concatenated into a single PDF file and uploaded to the

Application Submission Site

You will be asked for the seven-digit member numbers (no leading zero) of the student and the advisor and the paper ID of the submitted abstract.

Submissions will be accepted starting February 1st, 2020 and ending on July 20th, 2020. Successful applications will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Notification will be made shortly thereafter.
