SoR Student-Member Travel Grants for ICR 2023 (Updated)
The Society of Rheology is offering student-member travel grants to help support the cost of attending the XIXth International Congress on Rheology,
in Athens, Greece held July 31 – August 4, 2023. The deadline for applications has been extended to March 31, 2023.
In addition to student members, The Society of Rheology has opened the offer to early career members (within 5 years of graduation). Please note that student-member applicants are given higher priority.
Eligibility
These grants are available to any graduate student who, along with his/her/their advisor, is member in good standing of The SoR as of March 31, 2023
(expanded from January 18, 2023). Similar eligibility requirement applies to early career members (within 5 years of graduation).
In addition, the applicant must present a paper or poster at the congress and stay in Athenaeum Grand Hotel,
one of the conference hotels (applicants must stay at the designated hotel and will be provided with further instructions after notification of the award).
What are covered
Each grant will cover six nights (Check-in: Sunday July 30 / Check-out: Saturday August 5) of lodging at the conference rate. Meeting registration fee,
travel to and from the conference and any costs incurred during the ICR conference other than the hotel room are the responsibility of the applicant. You will not be assigned a roommate.
If you invite another graduate student attending the meeting to share the room, you will be responsible to pay the extra charges, and we ask that you let us know their name.
Application material needed from students
To apply, the student must write a letter requesting the grant, confirming that he/she/they is an SoR member in good-standing as of March 31, 2023, and discussing his/her/their
commitment to membership in the Society. The student must verify that he/she/they has an accepted oral presentation or has submitted an abstract to the poster session and that he/she/they
will be presenting this work. In addition, the letter must include the expected graduation date and explicitly answer the following questions:
-
Why do you plan to go to the ICR conference?
-
How your attendance to this conference would help your research area and your career?
-
What do you hope to accomplish by attending this conference?
The letter should not be longer than 500 words.
Application material needed from advisors
The student's advisor should download the Faculty Advisor Support Form (in PDF form).
Fill out the PDF form to certify that both the advisor and the student are SoR members in good standing as of March 31, 2023, indicate the session and title of the
accepted oral presentation or submitted abstract to the poster session, and confirm that the student will be the presenter. The advisor must also commit to pay for the students travel to and from the
conference and the ICR conference registration fee. Print out the filled out form into a regular PDF file for the student to merge with his/her/their application letter. Note that while
we anticipate only one applicant per advisor will be accepted, additional students will be allowed if space permits. If more than one student is applying, each form should indicate the advisor’s priority
as we cannot guarantee there will be sufficient positions to have more than one student per advisor.
The letter from the student and the filled out Faculty Advisor Support Form (printed as regular PDF file) should be merged into a single PDF file for upload.
Application material needed from Early Career Members (within five years of graduation)
To apply, the applicant must write a letter requesting the grant, confirming that he/she/they is an SoR member in good standing as of March 31, 2023, and discussing his/her/their
commitment to membership in the Society. The applicant must verify that he/she/they has an accepted oral presentation or has submitted an abstract to the poster session and that he/she/they
will be presenting this work. In addition, the letter must include the graduation date and explicitly answer the questions listed under student members.
Also include a letter from the employer confirming the approved travel and indicating the commitment to pay travel fees to and from the conference and the ICR conference fees. Please merge both letters into a single PDF file for upload.
How to apply
The merged single PDF file must be uploaded to the
Application Submission Site
You will be asked for the seven-digit member number (no leading zero) of the student and the advisor or the early career member, and the session and
title of the submitted abstract.
Submissions will be accepted starting February 12th, 2023 and closing on March 31st, 2023.
Successful applications will be awarded based on the merit of the application and responsiveness to the asked questions. Notification will be made shortly after the close of the application
submission window.
