General Information


Location

The 90th Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology will be held in Houston, Texas on October 14-18, 2018; the optional associated short course will be offered October 13th and 14th. The technical program will take place at the Westin Galleria Houston in the heart of Uptown Houston. The Westin Galleria Houston is part of the larger The Galleria, providing a wide selection of local attractions. The Galleria is Texas’ largest shopping center and fourth largest in the United States. It spans 2.4 million square feet of space, housing 400 fine stores and restaurants and a plethora of amenities, including a full-size ice rink for recreational and figure skating, a state of the art children’s play area, and two swimming pools.

The average high and low temperatures in Houston during October is 82°F and 59°F, respectively, with an average precipitation of 4.5 inches.

Air Transportation

The Westin Galleria Houston is located just 20 miles from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and 25 miles from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). More information about Houston airports can be found at Houston Airports website.

Ground Transportation from/to the Airport

From either airport, a variety of transportation options available including private car service, taxis, and airport shuttle. SuperShuttle is the recommended airport shuttle provider; reservations can be made online at or by calling them directly.

Registration

Conference registration includes access to all technical sessions and the vendor display, the program booklet, and all receptions and coffee breaks. The registration fee does not include the Bingham Medal Banquet; see details on the meeting registration page.

On-site registration will be held on Sunday, October 14th, from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Galleria Ballroom Foyer in the Westin Galleria Houston. Registration will also be held Monday through Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the same location.


Events

Welcoming Reception

The Welcoming Reception will be held on Sunday, October 14th, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Monarch Room on the 24th Floor of the Westin Galleria Houston.

Monday Evening Reception

Monday evening from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm will feature a special reception at the Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewery in Texas. Shuttle busses from the Westin Galleria Houston to the Brewery will be provided. The reception will include open tap on around a dozen of their beers and guided tours of the Brewery will be available. View event details.

Society Business Meeting

All attendees are encouraged to attend the annual business meeting of The Society of Rheology. This year the business meeting will be held on Tuesday October 16th from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm in the Galleria Ballroom I.

Bingham Medal Reception and Banquet

The Bingham Medal Reception and Banquet will be held on Tuesday, October 16th. The reception will be held from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Galleria Foyer. The reception is open to all meeting participants at no extra charge. The Bingham Medal Banquet will follow at 8:00 pm in the Monarch Room on the 24th Floor of the Westin Galleria Houston; banquet tickets can be purchased with the meeting registration (see meeting registration page for details).

Poster Session and Gallery of Rheology

The Poster Session and Reception will be held on Wednesday, October 17th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Woodway II & III Ballrooms of the Westin Galleria Houston. The Gallery of Rheology Contest will be from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Woodway Foyer.


Exhibits

Vendors will demonstrate their products from 8:30 am to 4 pm, Monday through Wednesday in the Galleria II & III Ballrooms of the Westin Galleria Houston. Coffee breaks will also be held in the Exhibit area. Vendors should contact the Local Arrangements Committee Chair Jason Maxey (Email Jason Maxey) directly about exhibit space.
