Text of Abstract
Protorheology is the first thing everyone does to assess rheological properties: poke, stir, scoop, drip, pile, and observe. Here we survey protorheology tests that provide visual evidence of key rheological phenomena and allow quantitative estimates of properties. Tests are grouped according to which rheological phenomenon is revealed (e.g. shear-thinning viscosity, viscoelasticity, normal stress differences in shear, extensional viscosity). Case studies show how protorheology enhances measurement with rheometers. It provides insight for choosing test conditions, consistency checks to avoid bad data, and context for interpreting results. These methods compose a collection of recipes for “do-it-yourself” rheometry that is useful for instruction, research, and broader technical communication.
