Text of Abstract
Dense suspensions are integral to numerous industrial processes, displaying intricate behaviors due to the complex interplay of particle interactions under shear forces. We study the phenomenon of shear jamming, where the suspension transitions from a fluid-like to a solid-like state under applied stress. Our research visualizes the transformative effect of adding rolling friction to systems that previously only considered sliding friction, showcasing its impact on the microstructure of dense suspensions. The image highlights how rolling friction captures the asperities of particles used in dense suspensions in industries and leading to a more accurate prediction of shear jamming. By comparing systems with and without rolling friction, our visualization emphasizes the critical role of different frictional constraints in shaping the mechanical behavior of suspensions, providing a clearer understanding of their complex rheological properties. This work underscores the importance of considering both sliding and rolling friction in predicting and controlling the behavior of dense suspensions in various industrial applications.
