Text of Abstract
Yield stress fluids, such as emulsions and foams, feature a wide range of mechanical properties. Below the yield stress, they behave like soft viscoelastic solids, but once sufficiently stressed, they flow like viscoelastic liquids. Although negligible at large scales (e.g., geophysical applications), capillary forces may become significant at meso- and micro-scales, and importantly under microgravity conditions. We refer to the phenomena in this regime as plastocapillarity. Here, we will discuss recent developments in plastocapillarity with a focus on the application of 3D printing and direct ink writing in space. To this end, we will present a series of experimental studies under various gravitational conditions, and also present numerical and theoretical frameworks for deformable elasto-viscoplastic materials under pure surface tension action. In the end, we will conclude by presenting a series of open problems in the field.
