Savvas G. Hatzikiriakos obtained his diploma in chemical engineering from the Aristotelean University of Thessaloniki (1983), his M.A.Sc. in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto (1988) and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from McGill University. Since 1991 he has been a professor in the department of chemical and biological engineering at the University of British Columbia. He has published over 230 referred journal papers, over 300 conference papers and presentations, six patents and one book on polymer processing instabilities. His awards include two best papers in the Journal of Rheology (1994 and 2011), the Killam Research Fellowship in 1995, the Future Technology Award in ANTEC 2000 (Society of Plastics Engineers) and the Mason award of the Canadian Society of Rheology. Prof Hatzikiriakos is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering as well as Senior Associate Editor of Physics of Fluids as of January 2016.

Significant contributions to the science of rheology include his experimental and theoretical studies on wall slip of molten polymers, polymer instabilities such as melt fracture, polymer blends (flow induced mixing and demixing) and experimental and theoretical developments in the area of identifying processing (slip) agents for polymer melt flow. He has mastered capillary rheometry using rheology to solve numerous important industrial problems related to polymer processing and as such he has served extensively most of the major polymer companies as a consultant. His contributions on the rheology of PTFE paste and the use of rheology to study polymer crystallization included flow induced are unique worldwide.
